Musings of a Southern Life 
After 26 years of living in upstate New York in the foothills of the Adirondacks, I relocated to a small community about 45 minutes outside of New Orleans in 2008. While I was raised in the south and my father is from South Carolina, living here has been a lesson in realities with a dash of the surreal. This Blog is where I am going to explore life here in southern Mississippi. It will bring a tad of insight, a blend of things to do, sights to see, and the growing cultural clash brought on in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
One of the first things I learned after moving here was the intense dislike native residents have for the people initially displaced by Katrina and who opted to stay, which by the way, helped improve the economically depressed state of the county, raising property values, tax revenue, and quality of the schools. It seems though, any newcomer, though met with southern grace and charm initially, is looked at as an invader. An immigrant who should go back to where they came from.
I attended an event being held in the high school auditorium one night as a stringer for the local newspaper and one of the highlihts of the evening was the distribution of door prizes. One of the items was a coffee table book on the history of the New York Yankees. When the emencee held the book up and informed the audience what it was, an audible hiss rose from the crowd. The woman who won the book made it clear they could keep it – and for the next several rounds, they tried to give the book away. Finally the book was sent off stage and the hosts quit trying to find an audience member who wanted it. I almost wanted to go outside and cover up my New York license plate – the one I left on the front as a souvenier of many wonderful years – but I didn’t.
